ABSTRACT: The main method of sugarcane smut (Sporisoriumscitamineum)control is the genetic resistance. This study assessed the reaction of Brazilian sugarcane genotypes to the smut. The design used was randomized blocks, with 41 genotypes and four replications. The experimental unit consisted of five seedlings per genotype. The genotypes were inoculated by immersing the buds in a smut spores’ suspension. For each genotype, it was obtained the disease incidence in percentage of stalk with whip and with the disease incidence data over time the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) were calculated for each genotype. Based in the AUDPC, three genotypes were classified as highly resistant (7.3%), eighteen as resistant (43.9%), twelve as moderately resistant (29.3%), three as moderately susceptible (7.3%) and five as susceptible (12.2%). Genotypes with higher levels of resistance to smut sugarcane can be used for integrated disease management and can be used as parents in new crosses in order to obtain progenies with higher proportion of genotypes resistant to smut.

RESUMO: O principal método de controle do carvão da cana-de-açúcar (Sporisorium scitamineum)é o controle genético. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a reação de genótipos brasileiros de cana-de-açúcar ao carvão. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos casualizados, com 41 genótipos e quatro repetições. A unidade experimental foi composta por cinco mudas por genótipo. Os genótipos foram inoculados através da imersão das gemas em uma suspensão de esporos do fungo. Para cada genótipo, obteve-se a incidência da doença em percentagem de colmos com chicote de carvão e com os dados de incidência da doença ao longo do tempo foi calculada a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD) para cada genótipo. Baseado na AACPD, três genótipos foram classificados como altamente resistentes (7,3%), dezoito como resistentes (43,9%), doze como moderadamente resistentes (29,3%), três como moderadamente suscetíveis (7,3%) e cinco como suscetíveis (12,2%). Genótipos com os maiores níveis de resistência ao carvão da cana-de-açúcar que podem ser utilizados para o manejo integrado da doença e como genitores em novos cruzamentos para obter progênies com maior proporção de genótipos resistentes ao carvão.

ABSTRACT: In the last decades, the high incidence of viruses transmitted by whiteflies has become a problem in the tomato fields, threatening, more recently, the potato crops. The present study carried out a survey of begomoviruses and criniviruses in tomato and potato crops, from 2015 to 2018, in the municipalities of Araucária, Campo do Tenente, Campo Largo, Contenda, Lapa, Faxinal, Morretes, Reserva, Castro, Palmeira and São Mateus do Sul, in Paraná State, Brazil. Total DNA and RNA from leaves were extracted and used as templates to detect, respectively, begomoviruses by PCR and criniviruses by RT-PCR. Out of 215 tomato samples, 14 from Faxinal were infected by crinivirus. The other tomato samples and 243 potato samples showed negative results for begomovirus and crinivirus. Results indicated a low incidence (6.5%) of crinivirus infecting tomato crops in Paraná State, and the nucleotide sequence of one amplified fragment shared 99.71% identity with tomato chlorotic virus (ToCV).

RESUMO: Nas últimas décadas, a alta incidência de vírus transmitidos por mosca-branca tornou-se um problema nos campos de tomateiros, ameaçando, mais recentemente, a cultura da batateira. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um levantamento de begomovírus e crinivírus em lavouras de tomateiro e batateira nos municípios de Araucária, Campo do Tenente, Campo Largo, Contenda, Lapa, Faxinal, Morretes, Reserva, Castro, Palmeira e São Mateus do Sul, no Estado do Paraná, Brasil, de 2015 à 2018. DNA e RNA totais de folhas foram extraídos e utilizados como molde para detectar begomovírus por PCR e crinivírus por RT-PCR. Das 215 amostras de tomateiros coletadas, 14 provenientes de Faxinal estavam infectadas por crinivírus. As demais amostras de tomateiro e as 243 amostras de batateira analisadas apresentaram resultados negativo para begomovírus e crinivírus. Os resultados indicaram baixa incidência (6,5%) de crinivírus infectando lavouras de tomateiros no Estado do Paraná e a sequência de nucleotídeos de um amplicon apresentou 99,71% de identidade com o crinivírus tomato chlorotic virus (ToCV).

ABSTRACT Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) can cause a reduction up to 50% in the production of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.). Genetic resistance is considered an important component in the management of nematodes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of 12 sugarcane genotypes when subjected to parasitism by Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita under controlled conditions in a plant growth chamber. Four experiments were carried out in randomized blocks with 12 treatments and four replicates for M. javanica and three replicates for M. incognita. The treatments were the sugarcane genotypes: RB966928 (susceptibility pattern), RB026842, RB036168, RB036145, RB036065, RB966229, RB036066, RB036068, RB046209, RB036163, RB036153, and RB036059. Each repetition consisted of a 2-L pot with previously autoclaved substrate (1:1 of sand and soil), and a pre-sprouted seedling was transplanted. From pure populations of M. javanica and M. incognita, approximately 2,000 eggs and eventual J2 were inoculated per pot. After 120 days, the final population of nematodes in the root and soil was counted using an optical light microscope and Peters slide, and the reproduction factor (RF) was calculated. Plants that presented RF < 1 were considered resistant, and plants that presented RF > 1 were considered susceptible. Among the 12 genotypes evaluated, 66% were susceptible to parasitism by M. javanica. The genotypes RB046209, RB036163, RB036153, and RB036059 were classified as resistant to M. javanica parasitism. For the species M. incognita, the susceptible genotypes represented 75% of the total, and the resistant genotypes were RB036163, RB036153, and RB036059.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides for controlling anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) on peach palm (Bactris gasipaesvar.gasipaes) seedlings in nursery beds and in newly planted peach palms in the field. The nursery experiment included two fungicide combinations: [thiophanate-methyl + chlorothalonil (TM + C) and pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole (P + E)], three application intervals (7, 14, and 21 days), and an additional nontreated control. The two field experiments with newly planted peach palms tested the fungicide combinations TM + C at 15-day intervals for 12 months after transplanting, comparing to the control without fungicide application. The severity of anthracnose was assessed, and it was used for calculating the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). The fungicides TM + C and E + P applied at 7-days intervals were effective in the control of anthracnose in peach palm seedlings, resulting in the lowest severities and AUDPC. The fungicide TM + C reduced the maximum disease severity and AUDPC under field conditions. However, differences in the final severity of anthracnose and stem diameter were not significant compared to the control. Therefore, the use of fungicides for control of anthracnose in the field is not necessary.

ABSTRACT Sugarcane-associated nematodes (Saccharum spp.) can reduce productivity up to 50%. Through the survey, it was possible to identify the main nematodes that occur in a certain region as a tool for designing the best management and control strategies. The aim of this study was to characterize the population of nematodes associated with sugarcane in the North Central, North Pioneiro and Northwest mesoregion of the state of Paraná, Brazil, quantify the nematode genera associated with the crop and identify the species of Pratylenchus and Meloidogyne. A total amount of 89 soil and root composite samples were collected in nine municipalities. Nematodes were extracted and counted in a Peters counting chamber under an optical light microscope. Morphological description followed identification keys. Pratylenchus spp. were identified by morphological characteristics; Meloidogyne spp. were identified by morphological characteristics and isoenzyme electrophoresis. Twelve genera of nematodes associated with sugarcane were identified: Pratylenchus, Meloidogyne, Helicotylenchus, Xiphinema, Mesocriconema, Trichodorus, Aphelenchus, Hoplolaimus, Tylenchus, Tylenchorhynchus, Ditylenchus, and Paratrichodorus. The genera Pratylenchus and Meloidogyne were found with the highest frequencies in the roots. Among the species of Pratylenchus, P. zeae and P. brachyurus were found, with P. zeae being the most frequent. Among the Meloidogyne species, only M. javanica was found. These results are essential to aid decision making in the management of phytonematodes, mainly in the development of new control strategies and in directing genetic breeding programs for development of sugarcane cultivars for the Paraná state.

RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar morfologicamente os isolados de Ceratocystis fimbriata e avaliar o efeito do meio de cultura e da temperatura no crescimento micelial e na esporulação de C. fimbriata. Para a caracterização morfológica dos 11 isolados monospóricos do fungo foram preparadas lâminas para determinar as dimensões das estruturas sexuadas e assexuadas do fungo. Quatro experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar o crescimento micelial e esporulação of C. fimbriata em diferentes meios de culturae temperaturas. Os isolados de C. fimbriata de erva-mate apresentaram peritécios com pescoço de marrom a preto, hifa ostiolar divergente, ascósporos hialinos em formato de chapéu, endoconídios unicelulares, cilíndricos, e aleuroconídios com formato globoso a ovoide. Os meios de cultura PDA e V8-ágar apresentaram os maiores crescimentos miceliais. A temperatura ótima média para crescimento micelial e esporulação dos isolados de C. fimbriata de erva-mate foram de 22,5 e 22,4 ºC, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to morphologically characterize the isolates of Ceratocystis fimbriata from yerba mate and to evaluate the effect of culture medium and temperature on mycelial growth and sporulation of C. fimbriata. For the morphological characterization of the 11 monosporic isolates of the fungus, slides were prepared to determine the dimensions of the sexual and asexual structures of the fungus. Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the mycelial growth and to evaluate the sporulation of C. fimbriata in different culture mediums and temperatures. The isolates of C. fimbriata from yerba mate showed perithecia with brown to black necks, divergent ostiolar hyphae, hatshaped hyaline ascospores, single-celled, cylindrical endoconidia, and globular to ovoid aleurioconidia. PDA and V8-agar media showed the highest mycelial growth. The average optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sporulation of isolates of C. fimbriata of yerba mate were 22.5 and 22.4 ºC, respectively.

RESUMO: Neste estudo foi proposto o desenvolvimento e validação de uma escala diagramática (ED) para avaliar a severidade do oídio (Podosphaera xanthii) em folhas de melancia (Citrullus lanatus). A ED proposta possui 12 níveis de severidade, variando de 0,07 a 100%. A ED foi validada por 16 avaliadores inexperientes em avaliação de severidade de doenças de plantas. Inicialmente, as estimativas de severidade foram realizadas sem o uso da ED em folhas com diferentes níveis de severidade. No segundo momento, os mesmos avaliadores estimaram a severidade da doença usando a ED proposta. Pela análise da correlação concordante de Lin, houve melhoria na precisão (coeficiente de correlação, r = 0,787 e r = 0,959, sem e com o uso da ED, respectivamente) e acurácia (fator de correção do desvio, Cb = 0,830 e 0,982, sem e com o uso da ED, respectivamente) usando a ED quando comparado ao não uso da ED. O coeficiente de correlação concordante de Lin, ρc = 0,734 e 0,952 sem e com o uso da ED, respectivamente) também melhorou com o uso da ED. As estimativas de severidade tiveram melhoria na reprodutibilidade quando a ED foi usada (coeficiente de determinação, R2=0,681 e R2 = 0,864 sem e com o uso da ED, respectivamente; coeficiente de correlação intra-classe, ρ = 0,759 e ρ = 0,928, sem e com o uso da ED, respectivamente). Portanto, a ED melhorou a precisão, acurácia e reprodutibilidade das estimativas de severidade do oídio em folhas de melancia.

ABSTRACT: The development and validation of a standard area diagram set (SADs) was proposed in this study to assess the severity of powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) leaves. The SADs proposed has twelve levels of severity, varying from 0.07 to 100%. The SADs were validated by 16 raters who had no previous experience in evaluating plant disease severity. Initially, the estimation of severity was performed without the use of the SADs in leaves with different levels of severity. In a second moment, the same raters estimated the disease severity using the SADs proposed. By Lin’s concordance correlation analysis, there was an improvement in precision (coefficient of correlation, r = 0.878 and r = 0.959, without and with SADs, respectively) and accuracy (bias correction factor, Cb = 0.830 and 0.982, without and with SADs, respectively) using SADs when compared to the non-use of SADs. The agreement (Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient, ρc = 0.734 and 0.952 without and with SADs, respectively) also improved using SADs. Severity estimates inter-rater were more reliable when using SADs (coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.681 without and R2 = 0.864 with SADs; Intra-class correlation coefficient, ρ = 0.759 and ρ = 0.928, without and with SADs, respectively). Therefore, SADs improved precision, accuracy and reliability of powdery mildew severity on watermelon leaves.

RESUMO: Neste trabalho onze genótipos de cana-de-açúcar foram classificados em relação à sua resistência à ferrugem marrom, e onze quanto à resistência à ferrugem alaranjada. Foi realizada a inoculação no “cartucho foliar” de colmos com 165 dias, no município de Paranavaí, PR, em 2017. A avaliação foi feita aos 30 dias após a inoculação, utilizando uma escala de notas. Dos genótipos avaliados para ferrugem marrom, quatro foram classificados como suscetíveis, seis como moderadamente suscetíveis e um apresentou resistência moderada. Para a ferrugem alaranjada, três genótipos foram classificados como suscetíveis, sete como moderadamente suscetíveis e um como moderadamente resistente. A avaliação e classificação da reação de genótipos de cana-de-açúcar às ferrugens é uma ferramenta importante que auxilia em ensaios preliminares, na escolha de genótipos promissores para fases mais avançadas dos programas de melhoramento além de fornecer informações aos produtores na seleção das cultivares que serão plantadas.

ABSTRACT: In this research eleven sugarcane genotypes were classified in relation to their resistance to brown rust, and eleven to their resistance to orange rust. Artificial inoculation was carried out in the leaf whorl of 165-day-old plants in the city of Paranavaí, Paraná State, Brazil, in 2017. The evaluation was performed 30 days after inoculation, using a rating scale. Among the genotypes tested for brown rust, four were classified as susceptible, six as moderately susceptible and one presented moderate resistance. For orange rust, three genotypes were classified as susceptible, seven as moderately susceptible and one as moderately resistant. The evaluation and classification of the reaction of sugarcane genotypes to the rusts is an important tool that assist in preliminary trials and selection of promising genotypes for more advanced stages of breeding programs and provides information to producers on the choice of cultivars to be planted.

RESUMO A mancha-bacteriana é uma das principais doenças do maracujazeiro amarelo. O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver e validar uma escala diagramática para melhorar a acurácia e precisão na avaliação da severidade da mancha-bacteriana em folhas de maracujazeiro-amarelo. A escala diagramática proposta, composta de ilustrações de folhas sintomáticas com nove níveis de severidade (1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 e 62%), foi validada por 15 avaliadores. A acurácia, precisão e a reprodutibilidade da escala diagramática foram validadas pela quantificação e comparação das avaliações realizadas por 15 avaliadores com e sem o uso da escala diagramática. A escala melhorou a acurácia (fator de correção, Cb= 0,940 sem escala e 0,967, com escala), precisão (coeficiente de correlação, r = 0,901 sem escala e 0,949 com escala) e concordância (coeficiente de correlação de concordância de Lin, ρc = 0,863 sem escala e 0,935 com escala) das estimativas de severidade. A reprodutibilidade entre avaliadores melhorou com o uso da escala (coeficiente de determinação, R2 = 0,717 sem e R2 = 0,880 com a escala, e coeficiente correlação intra-classe ρ = 0,798 sem e ρ = 0,926 com a escala). A escala diagramática desenvolvida melhorou a acurácia, precisão e reprodutibilidade das avaliações da severidade da doença, sendo recomendada como auxiliar na avaliação da mancha-bacteriana em folhas de maracujazeiro-amarelo.

ABSTRACT Bacterial blight is one of the most important diseases of yellow passion fruit. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a set of standard area diagram (SADs) to improve the accuracy and precision of bacterial blight severity assessments on yellow passion fruit leaves. The proposed SADs, composed of illustrations of symptomatic leaves with nine severity levels (1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 62%), were evaluated by 15 raters. Accuracy, precision and reliability of the SADs were validated by quantifying and comparing the assessments performed by 15 raters with and without the use of SADs. The SADs improved accuracy (coefficient of bias, Cb = 0.940 without SADs and 0.967 with SADs), precision (correlation coefficient, r = 0.901 without SADs and 0.949 with SADs) and overall agreement (Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient, ρc = 0.863 without SADs and 0.935 with SADs) of severity estimates. Inter-rater reliability also significantly improved when the SADs were used (coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.717 without and R2 = 0.880 with the SADs; intra-class correlation, ρ = 0.798 without and ρ = 0.926 with the SADs). The developed SADs improved accuracy, precision and reliability of disease severity assessments and are recommended as an aid to assess bacterial blight on yellow passion fruit leaves.

Resumo O Brasil é o principal produtor mundial de maracujá, mas as ocorrências de doenças têm reduzido sua produtividade e limitado seu cultivo por vários anos em sequência na mesma área. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a severidade de doenças e a produtividade nos sistemas de condução em espaldeira e em caramanchão durante duas safras, em cultivo anual. Nas safras de 2013/2014 e 2014/2015 o trabalho foi realizado em pomar comercial de maracujazeiro-amarelo em Araquari-SC, testando-se como tratamentos os sistemas de condução em espadeira e em caramanchão em DBC, com oito repetições. Foram realizados os tratos culturais recomendados para a cultura, polinização natural e avaliadas nas duas safras a intensidade da antracnose, da mancha-bacteriana, da cladosporiose e da virose do endurecimento no fruto, de dezembro a junho, a partir do estabelecimento dos sistemas de condução. A produção de frutos por planta e a produtividade estimada foram determinadas. Não houve diferenças nas severidades das doenças avaliadas nos dois sistemas e safras. O sistema em caramanchão mostrou-se mais produtivo (78,1% e 57,1%) do que o sistema em espaldeira, nas safras de 2013/2014 e 2014/2015, respectivamente, demonstrando ser o melhor sistema de condução para o maracujazeiro-amarelo.

Abstract Brazil is the largest producer of passion fruit worldwide, however diseases have been reducing passion fruit productivity, and limiting its cultivation for several years in a row in the same area. The proposal of this study was to evaluate diseases intensity and productivity of yellow passion fruit in vertical and overhead trellis systems, during two seasons, in annual cycle. The experiment was realized in a commercial orchard of yellow passion fruit in the municipality of Araquari, SC, in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. The treatments were vertical and overhead trellis systems, tested in a randomized complete block design, with eight replications. The agronomic practices were performed according to the culture recommendations and naturally pollinated althoght no disease control was applied. Anthracnose, bacterial blight, cladosporiosis and passion fruit woodiness severities were assessed in two seasons, from December to June, after establishment of the trellis systems. Production of fruits per plant and estimated productivity were determined in both seasons. There were no differences in diseases severity in both systems and seasons. The overhead trellis system was more productive than the vertical trellis system, 78.1% and 57.1% respectively, in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. Overhead trellis system showed to be the most adequate for yellow passion fruit production.

RESUMO O álamo (Populus deltoides) é uma espécie florestal que possui diversos problemas fitossanitários, como a ocorrência de manchas foliares, ferrugens e podridões radiculares. Desde 2010 tem-se verificado a morte de árvores em plantios comerciais no estado do Paraná, Brasil, ocasionados pelo fungo Rosellinia bunodes. Devido a carência de informações sobre este patossistema, objetivou-se com esse trabalho, realizar a caracterização fisiológica de isolados de R. bunodes e sintomatológica da roseliniose em álamo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na Embrapa Florestas, localizada no município de Colombo (PR), Brasil. O crescimento micelial de nove isolados de R. bunodes foi avaliado em quatro meios de cultura (batata-dextrose-ágar, V8- ágar, cenoura-ágar e ágar-água) e sete temperaturas (8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 e 32 °C). A caracterização sintomatológica da roseliniose foi realizada em mudas de álamo, com aproximadamente seis meses de idade. As condições mais favoráveis ao crescimento micelial de R. bunodes foram observadas no meio de cultura batata-dextroseágar (BDA) a temperatura de 24 °C. Os sintomas e sinais do patógeno internamente ao caule mostraramse aparentes aos 7 dias após a inoculação (DAI); por outro lado, os sintomas de clorose associada a murcha tornaram-se visíveis apenas aos 14 DAI. Não foram observadas estruturas reprodutivas sexuadas e assexuadas de R. bunodes nas plantas inoculadas.

ABSTRACT Poplar (Populus deltoides) is a forest species that has several phytosanitary problems, such as leaf spots, rusts and root rots. Since 2010, the death of poplar trees has been observed in commercial plantations in the state of Paraná, Brazil, caused by the fungus Rosellinia bunodes. Due to the lack of information about this pathosystem, the aim of this work was to carry out the physiological characterization of R. bunodes isolates collected from P. deltoides and the symptomatological characterization of Rosellinia root rot in the same host. Experiments were conducted at Embrapa Florestas, located in Colombo (PR), Brazil. The mycelial growth of nine R. bunodes isolates was evaluated in four culture media (potato-dextrose-agar, V8-agar, carrot-agar and water-agar) and seven different incubation temperatures (8, 12, 16, 20 24, 28 and 32 °C). The symptomatological characterization of Rosellinia root rot was performed on six-month-old poplar seedlings. The most favorable conditions for mycelial growth of R. bunodes were observed in potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 24 °C. The symptoms and signs of the disease internally in the stem showed up at 7 days after inoculation (DAI); however, chlorosis and wilting were observed only at 14 DAI. Sexual and asexual reproductive structures of R. bunodes were not observed on inoculated plants.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da aplicação de silicato de cálcio e de cinza de casca de arroz (CCA) na incidência de fungos associados a manchas em sementes de arroz irrigado. Plantas de arroz foram submetidas à aplicação de silicato de cálcio ou CCA nas doses de 0, 51, 153, 256 e 357 kg ha-1de silício (Si). Dois experimentos foram conduzidos, sendo um na safra 2007/2008 e outro na safra 2008/2009 e, posteriormente, amostras de sementes foram analisadas em laboratório. Foram realizadas avaliações do Índice de Escurecimento de Sementes (IES), da concentração de Si no pericarpo das sementes e a determinação da diversidade dos fungos presentes nas sementes. Não houve efeito das duas fontes de Si empregadas, nas doses utilizadas nos dois experimentos no IES e na concentração de Si. Os fungos fitopatogênicos encontrados em ambos experimentos foram Alternaria padwickiii, Bipolarisoryzae, Botrytis cinerea, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium semitectum, F. solani, Microdochium oryzae, Nigrospora oryzae, Phoma sorghina e Pyriculariaoryzae. A incidência destes fungos não foi afetada pela aplicação das fontes de Si nas doses utilizadas.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of calcium silicate and rice husk ash (CCA) application on the incidence of fungi associated with spots in flooded rice seeds. Rice plants were subjected to application of calcium silicate or CCA at the levels of 0, 51, 153, 256 and 357 kg ha-1 of silicon (Si). Two experiments were performed, one in the 2007/2008 crop season and another one in the 2008/2009 season; subsequently, seed samples were analyzed in laboratory. Evaluations were performed for Seed Browning Index (IES), Si concentration in the pericarp of the seeds and determination of the diversity of seedborne fungi. There was no effect of the two employed Si sources at the used levels in both experiments, for IES and Si concentration. The phytopathogenic fungi found in both experiments were Alternaria padwickiii, Bipolaris oryzae, Botrytis cinerea, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium semitectum, F. solani, Microdochium oryzae, Nigrospora oryzae, Phoma sorghina and Pyricularia oryzae. The incidence of these fungi was not affected by the application of Si sources at the used levels.

A ocorrência de doenças, como a ferrugem da folha (Puccinia triticina) e a mancha amarela (Drechslera tritici-repentis), pode reduzir a produtividade do trigo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de silicato de potássio (SP) e de fungicidas, no controle da ferrugem da folha e da mancha amarela, nos cultivares de trigo Safira e Quartzo. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, no esquema de parcelas subdivididas e com quatro repetições. Os cultivares foram alocados nas parcelas e, nas subparcelas, os tratamentos: T1 - testemunha, T2 - fungicida (azoxistrobina 60 g i.a./ha + ciproconazol 24 g i.a./ha) foram aplicados nos estádios 45 (final da elongação) e 58 (espigamento); T3 - SP (40 g/L), aplicado nos estádios 45 e 58 ; T4 - SP (40 g/L), aplicado no estádio 45, e fungicida aplicado no estádio 58; T5 - hidróxido de potássio (6,5 g/L) foi aplicado nos estádios 45 e 58. O volume de calda utilizado para as pulverizações foi de 250 L/ha. As severidades da ferrugem da folha e da mancha amarela foram avaliadas, a partir dos sete dias, após a primeira pulverização de SP e de fungicida, e, depois, a cada semana, totalizando cinco avaliações. Os dados foram utilizados para calcular a área abaixo da curva do progresso da ferrugem da folha (AACPFF) e a área abaixo da curva do progresso da mancha amarela (AACPMA). O SP, nas doses e número de aplicações avaliadas, não foi eficiente na redução da AACPMA e da AACPFF, nos dois cultivares.

The occurrence of diseases such as leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and yellow spot (Drechslera tritici-repentis) can decrease wheat yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application of potassium silicate (PS) and fungicide on the control of leaf rust and yellow spot in the cultivars Safira and Quartzo. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block split-split plot design with four replications. The cultivars were randomly assigned to the main plot, and in the subplots, the treatments T1 - control, T2 - fungicide (azoxystrobin 60 g a.i/ha + ciproconazole + 24 g a.i/ha) sprayed at the growth stages 45 (booting) and 58 (heading), T3 - PS (40 g/L) sprayed at growth stages 45 and 58, T4 - PS (40 g/L) and fungicide sprayed, respectively, at growth stages 45 and 58 and T5 - potassium hydroxide (6.5 g/L) sprayed in the growth stages of 45 and 58. The volume used in the sprays was 250 L/ha. The evaluation of leaf rust and yellow spot severity started at 7 days after the first spraying and then every week, in a total of five assessments. Data of disease severity were used to calculate the area under leaf rust progress curve (AULRPC) and the area under yellow spot progress curve (AUYSPC). The PS, at the rate and the number of sprayings, was not efficient to decrease both AUYSPC and AULRPC in the two cultivars.

Duas escalas diagramáticas foram desenvolvidas para quantificar a severidade da mancha-bacteriana do feijão-caupi, causada pela bactéria Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignicola, em cultivares de feijão-caupi de trifólios com folíolos ovais e lanceolados. Trifólios com diferentes níveis de severidade foram coletados para determinação do limite mínimo e máximo de severidade, sendo níveis intermediários determinados de acordo com a "Lei do Estímulo de Weber-Fechner". Os níveis propostos foram: 0,05; 0,25; 1,00; 3,40; 9,70; e 17,70% para trifólios com folíolos ovais e 0,10; 0,35; 1,10; 3,50; 9,30; e 19,10% para trifólios com folíolos lanceolados. As escalas foram validadas por meio do cálculo da sua acurácia e precisão. Para tanto, realizou-se análises de regressão linear da severidade real com a estimada com e sem o uso das escalas propostas. As estimativas foram feitas por 12 avaliadores sem experiência em quantificar essa doença em 50 trifólios com diferentes níveis de severidade da mancha-bacteriana. Para isso, avaliou-se a acurácia e a precisão dos avaliadores. Com a utilização das escalas diagramáticas, obtiveram-se níveis satisfatórios de acurácia e precisão. Assim, as escalas propostas tornam-se uma ferramenta fácil e de rápida utilização, que podem ser adotadas para auxiliar na avaliação da severidade da mancha-bacteriana do feijão-caupi, em estudos epidemiológicos e seleção de cultivares resistentes a doença.

Two diagrammatic scales were developed to assess the severity of bacterial blight of cowpea, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignicola in cowpea cultivars with oval and lanceolate leaflets, considering the limits for minimum and maximum severity of the disease, as well as intermediate levels. The levels were determined in accordance with the "Weber-Fechner's Stimulus Responses Law", representing: 0.05; 0.25; 1.00; 3.40; 9.70; and 17.70% for diagrammatic scale with oval leaflets and 0.10; 0.35; 1.10; 3, 50; 9.30; and 19.10% for lanceolate leaflets. The scales were validated by means of their accuracy and precision. To calculate these factors, linear regression analysis of actual disease severity and the estimated ones with and without the use of the scales. Twelve non-experienced evaluators estimated 50 leaflets with different levels of severity bacterial blight. For this, the accuracy and precision of the evaluators was assessed. With the use of diagrammatic scales, there were satisfactory levels of accuracy and precision. Thus, the diagrammatic scales proposed were considered appropriate to assess the severity of bacterial blight of cowpea and can be used in epidemiological studies, to evaluate the reactions of genotypes to the disease.

A produção da soja pode ser afetada pela ocorrência de várias doenças. Dentre estas, a ferrugem, causada pelo fungo Phakopsora pachyrhizi, tem se destacado. Atualmente, novas estratégias de controle para essa doença devem ser pesquisadas. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência do silicato de potássio (KSi), acibenzolar-S-metil e fungicidas no controle da ferrugem da soja. Um experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo, em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, utilizando-se 10 tratamentos, com três repetições. Foi utilizada a cultivar 'Monarca' por ser suscetível à ferrugem. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: T1 - testemunha (pulverização com água); T2 - KSi (1,2kg ha-1); T3 - KSi (2,4kg ha-1); T4 - KSi (3,6kg ha-1); T5 - KSi (4,8kg ha-1); T6 - tebuconazole (125g de i.a. ha-1); T7 - cloreto de potássio (61,72g L-1); T8 - mancozebe (2400g de i.a. ha-1); T9 - mancozebe (2400g de i.a. ha-1) + KSi (1,2kg ha-1) e T10 - acibenzolar-S-metil (125g de i.a. ha-1). As plantas da bordadura foram inoculadas com uma suspensão de 5x10(5) uredosporos mL-1 no estádio V4 para constituírem fonte de inóculo, para as parcelas centrais. As plantas foram pulverizadas com os produtos que constituíram os tratamentos T2, T3, T4, T5, T7, T8 e T9 nos estádios V5, R1, R4 e R5.4 e os tratamentos T6 e T10 nos estádios R1, R4 e R5.4. As plantas foram pulverizadas com atomizador costal manual de bico cônico empregando-se um volume de calda de 200L ha-1. Foram realizadas cinco avaliações da severidade da ferrugem nos terços inferior, médio e superior das plantas utilizando-se uma escala diagramática variando de 0,6 a 78,5%, e os dados obtidos foram utilizados para calcular a área abaixo da curva do progresso da ferrugem (AACPF). Não houve efeito significativo das doses de KSi na AACPF e severidade máxima (Ymax) nos terços inferior, médio e superior das plantas, além da produtividade. Os tratamentos 8, 9 e 10 apresentaram eficiência intermediária no controle da ferrugem. O tratamento 6 foi o mais eficiente no controle da doença por resultar nos menores valores da AACPF e Ymax para os terços inferior, médio e superior, além de uma produtividade significativamente maior em relação aos demais tratamentos.

Soybean production can be affected by the occurrence of several diseases. Among them, the rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, has been outstanding. Nowadays, new strategies to control soybean rust need to be searched. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of potassium silicate (KSi), acibenzolar-S-methyl and some fungicides on the control of soybean rust. An experiment was carried out under field conditions in a randomized complete block design with 10 treatments and three replications. The cultivar 'Monarca' was used because it is susceptible to rust. The treatments used were: T1 - control (plants sprayed with water); T2 - KSi (1.2kg ha-1); T3 - KSi (2.4kg ha-1); T4 - KSi (3.6kg ha-1); T5 - KSi (4.8kg ha-1); T6 - tebuconazol (125g de a.i. ha-1); T7 - potassium cloride (61.72g L-1); T8 - mancozeb (2400g de a.i. ha-1); T9 - mancozeb (2400g de a.i. ha-1) + KSi (1.2kg ha-1) and T10 - acibenzolar-S-methyl (125g de a.i. ha-1). Plants from the two lateral lines were inoculated with a suspension of 5x10(5) uredospores/mL at the V4 growth stage to produce inoculum to infect plants at the two central lines. Plants were sprayed with the products that constituted the treatments T2, T3, T4, T5, T7, T8, and T9 at V5, R1, R4, and R5.4 growth stages; and the treatments T6 and T10 at R1, R4, and R5.4 growth stages. Plants were sprayed using a costal sprayer in a volume of 200L ha-1. A total of five disease severity evaluations at the low, medium and high part of the plant canopy were done using a diagrammatic scale ranging from 0.6 to 78.5%. Data were used to calculate the area under rust progress curve (AURPC). There was no effect of the KSi rates on AURPC and final disease severity (Ymax) at the low, medium and high part of the plant canopy. Yield was also unaffected. The treatments 8, 9, and 10 had an intermediary efficiency on rust control. The treatment 6 was the most efficient on rust control giving the lowest values for AURPC and Ymax for the low, medium and high part of the plant canopy. High values for yield were also obtained using this treatment as compared to the others.
